Douglas Edward Wortman

Douglas Edward Wortman, 58, of Thornville, Ohio was called home on August 13, 2022 at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, after a second courageous battle with cancer. Doug was born November 18, 1963 in Columbus, Ohio to Edward and Judith Wortman. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Stacie Wortman of Thornville; son, Aaron Wortman of Athens; daughter, Lindsey (Zach) Eveland of Shawnee with granddaughter, Mara Mae; daughter, Leah (Ryan) Washek of Lancaster; brother, Barry (Regina) Wortman of Lewis Center with nephews, Nathaniel and Kyle; stepbrother, Craig (Angela) Mansperger of Grove City; stepbrother, Tom (DeAnne) Stewart Jr. of Russell Springs, KY; mother-in-law, Jeri Shafer of Pickerington; brother-in-law, Scott (Melissa) Shafer of Pickerington with nieces, Vivien and Audrey Shafer; Doug is also survived by several other uncles, aunts, and cousins. Doug is preceded in death by father, Edward Wortman; mother, Judith Wortman; and father-in-law, William Shafer. Doug proudly served the citizens of Columbus with the Columbus Division of Fire for 33 years. Doug spent his life selflessly helping others on and off the job. Doug taught at Hocking College, Bowling Green State University, and the Columbus Division of Fire Academy. He was instrumental in the development of Columbus Fire's "Saving our Own Program" which he was very proud of. This program is essential in assisting firefighters in the rescue of other firefighters and is being taught throughout the country. Doug was passionate about leaving the fire department better than he found it. Doug loved deer hunting, boating, camping, playing drums, and was a car enthusiast. Doug spent time as a Nascar Firefighter and spent countless hours building a rally car to race in his retirement. Above all else, and most importantly Doug loved his family. Friends may call on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 from 9am-11am at the X Church 6600 Bigerton Bend, Canal Winchester, Ohio 43110 with a funeral service to follow at 11am. Celebration of life to follow the service at Columbus Firefighters Local 67 located at 379 W. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Columbus Firefighters Foundation at 379 W. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. Day Funeral Service is honored to serve the family of Douglas Wortman.
