Evelyn Marie (Yates) Scarberry

Evelyn Marie (Yates) Scarberry 87, died on July 23, 2019 at Pickering House, Lancaster, Ohio. She was born in Napoleon, Ohio on September 29, 1931 to David Snowden Yates and Esther Lillian (Dawson) Yates. Evelyn was preceded by her husband, Earnie Scarberry; her siblings, Dorothy Hunter, Katherine King, Helen Williamson, David S. Yates Jr. and Robert (Bob) Yates. Evelyn was the last of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Rita Richards and her husband Don of Lancaster, OH; her grandchildren, Abraham Richards, Lancaster, OH; Justin (Sarah) Richards, Atlanta GA; Alan (Bethany) Richards, Atlanta GA.; 2 great grandchildren, Aleeza Richards, Atlanta, GA. and Michael Richards, Lancaster, OH; many nieces and nephews in Jackson, Wellston, Chillicothe and in multiple states. She also is survived by her sister in law, Kay McKinniss Scarberry of Columbus, Ohio and Violet Yates of Wellston, Ohio. The last 10 years, Evelyn lived with Don and Rita at their home. Evelyn was a retired telephone operator for GTE (Verizon) for over 30 years. It was a job that she loved! Talking to people, asking them how they were or even what they needed, was her passion. If an older person didn’t have food, after work she went to the store and showed up on their doorstep with dinner. Usually, walked into their home, chatted with them and cleaned up their kitchen too! She was also a farmers wife. Helping Earnie with their farm in Jackson was an everyday part of life. Growing a garden was a part of farming. Their huge gardens produced more than enough food for the family. So, she and Earnie would spend many evenings after work harvesting extra corn, green beans, onions and potatoes. They would load up their car, head out to neighbors in Pattonsville and Bloomfield areas and knock on doors to give away all that would have gone to waste. Evelyn and Lizzie Scarberry (Earnie’s mother) would can or freeze all they could every summer. Earnie and Evelyn loved to farm together. They were a great team. Evelyn loved Jesus and attended Fairfield Christian Church for quite a few years. Those friendships were very precious to her. She called a few of them in the last month or so just to check in and see how they were doing. Her best friend, Mari Landreth, has been a large part of her life for the last 10 years. Mari and Evelyn spent many days out visiting friends, chatting and speaking by phone every day. Mari was able to stay with Evelyn while Rita and her family vacationed every summer. They were regulars and DQ or Wendy’s! She loved those outings. There will be no formal funeral services, which was her wish. Evelyn will be buried at Pattonsville Cemetery near Wellston, OH next to her husband, Earnie Scarberry, at a later date.
