Holly Ann Short

Holly Short (Buckley), 66, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by her family and friends. Born on March 3, 1960, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Holly always considered Pittsfield to be her hometown. She graduated from Indian River Central School in 1978, where she was an honor student actively involved in theater, musicals, AFS, and marine biology. She was voted as "Most Friendly" by her classmates. Following graduation, Holly attended Jefferson Community College, Berkshire Community College, and Ohio University, where she pursued studies in theater and psychology. In 2004, she graduated from Bohlen Technical Center in Watertown, New York, as a Licensed Practical Nurse, and in 2005 she earned her EMT-Basic certification through Jefferson County Fire and EMS Training. Throughout her life, Holly worked in many professions, including waitress, store clerk, cook, nurse, and home health aide. Nursing became her true calling, and she was especially gifted in caring for geriatric patients. Holly’s handwriting was absolutely beautiful as was her soul. As a writer and a believer in God winks, she had a story published titled "Holly and Holly" in the God Wink Christmas stories book by bestselling author Squire Rushnell in 2018. Holly was the creator of a well-known character in our family named Twitchy Witch. Her stories of Twitchy were magical and handed down to the next generation. She also loved writing poetry. Holly was deeply committed to serving others. She volunteered with the Philadelphia Ambulance, taught Vacation Bible School, and joyfully helped young children sing about Jesus. She organized numerous community benefits for families in need and never hesitated to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. Holly loved God, her country, singing, good books, laughter, anything denim, animals, the Appalachian Mountains, and above all, her family and friends. In 2008, she married the love of her life, Ricky Short, and together they made their home in McArthur, Ohio, beginning in 2015. To quote Holly from her Facebook profile: "LOVE, is the greatest gift of all." Holly is survived by her parents, James K. and Virginia R. (Farrar) Buckley of Antwerp, New York; her devoted husband, Ricky Short of McArthur, Ohio; her sons, Tyler Vulgamore (Jessica) of Douglas, Wyoming, and Travys Vulgamore (Mackenzie) of Ogdensburg, New York; and her two adored granddaughters, Amelia and Aurora Vulgamore; Sister-in-law, Charlotte Carpenter of Laurelville, Ohio; her siblings, James K. (Melodee) Buckley of Philadelphia, New York, Timothy (Jane) Buckley of Antwerp, New York, Robert (Lori) Buckley of Antwerp, New York, Jeff (Lisa) Buckley of Antwerp, New York, Bonnie (Harry) Reed of Antwerp, New York, Colleen (Harry) Dindl of Antwerp, New York, and Dawn Chappell (Tim Beckstead) of Antwerp, New York; along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Katherine Buckley and Robert and Hazel Farrar; her maternal aunt, Donna Farrar; her paternal uncle, Phillip Buckley; and her brother-in-law, Bradley Chappell. As we remember Holly's life of compassion, faith, and service to others, we close with a prayer that reflects the heart with which she lived: Lord, You have called us to serve as Your Son did, especially those who are mentally or physically ill and in need of our prayers. Those who care for the sick are angels whose strength and selfless service give comfort with compassion. Lord, watch over the caregiver and provide hope and healing to the patient. Amen.
